Information technology is growing rapidly more important in various sectors of society. The transport sector too is greatly affected by these developments. Wide-ranging research and development into the use of information technology in road traffic is currently in progress all over the world. The new technology is expected to bring together travelling times, greater safety and comfort and additional scope for the ecological planning and adjustment of road transport operations. At the same time, the application of information technology to the existing infrastructure has raised a number of questions which demand closer study. This is the background to the decision by the Swedish Ministry of Transport and Communications to undertake a review of information technology within its ambit. Special terms of reference for this work were supplied in a memorandum dated 1st July 1992, and market analyst Anders Wärmark was appointed to carry out the review. The findings are presented in the report `Informationsteknologi på väg : en analys av trafikpolitiska konsekvenser (Ds 1992/93:47)'. The present English translation is based in the summary of conclusions and recommendations in that report.
