Samenvatting

This chapter reviews literature concerning issues relating to the navigation requirements of drivers. Driver characteristics are discussed including spatial ability and cognitive mapping. Different information presentation approaches to vehicle navigation aids are described including moving map displays (heading-up and north-up), route guidance and verbal navigation. Safety issues and navigation technology are discussed. The costs associated with recoverable navigation waste are outlined and the role of traffic management technology in reducing this is assessed with examples given from Europe, Japan and the United States. Suggestions are made for future research in the areas of vehicle location technology and human factors issues.
