Samenvatting

Traffic safety has always been a major focus of traffic engineers, but the emergence of intelligent collision avoidance systems offers new opportunities to dramatically improve safety. Infrastructure-based collision avoidance systems use roadside sensors, processors, driver information devices, and infrastructure-to-vehicle communication systems to identify hazards and warn drivers so that potential crashes can be avoided. This paper introduces some promising system concepts, details the vehicle and general infrastructure requirements for intelligent collision avoidance systems, and assesses their potential for deployment.
