Samenvatting

Existing restraint systems have been shown to effectively mitigate injury and death in a wide varitey of crash scenarios. However, limitations still exist because of the necessity to design a restraint system with a single operating point. This single operating point is carefully chosen to provide as much protection to a range of occupants as possible but is strongly driven by the need for regulation compliance. Smart restraint systems, restraint systems that can adapt and adjust their configuration based on the opearing environment at the time of collisiosn, will allow for optimal restraint for various occupant sizes, positions, and crash conditions.
