Samenvatting
The present situation of urban settlement in the Netherlands is described and its growth since approximately a hundred years is outlined. The location of suburban areas has become less selective. The city region is the functional entity. The increase in living standards caused a change in dwelling objectives, leading to a decrease in the density of housing and an increase in the average daily commuting distances between living and working locations.
