Samenvatting

Attention is paid to logistics innovations in order to attempt to control the growth of lorry traffic in the interests of the environment. A number of recent logistics innovations, notably the centralisation of inventory and Just-in-time delivery, appears to have been extremely successful in a commercial context. However, it is also the case that these innovations result in transport activities which are more damaging to the environment than the superseded methods of goods distribution. From a public policy point of view, there are a number of actions that can limit the extent of environmental deterioration caused by logistics innovation.
