Samenvatting

Technological innovations - and especially intelligent transport systems (ITS) - can be important tools for developing sustainable mobility. Most of the technologies needed for the realisation of ITS are developed and available, but not yet deployed to a larger extent. In this paper, results of comparative analysis of innovation and deployment strategies for ITS in metropolitan areas in Europe and the United States are presented. Criteria for successful ITS implementations with regard to sustainable mobility are developed and discussed. It is shown that for a comprehensive assessment of ITS technologies and for the design of successful innovation strategies, additional research on the impacts of widespread ITS deployment as well as on organisational barriers and institutional and legal issues is necessary.
