Samenvatting

This paper introduced the development of an innovative TDR strip sensor for monitoring subsurface moisture distribution. The sensor is made of inexpensive metal strips, which is rugged and easy to deploy. Preliminary laboratory and field evaluations find the sensor has high sensitivity and provide accurate measurements. The performance of sensor was evaluated in laboratory simulated conditions. From these satisfactory results were obtained on the use of this sensor for moisture migration. The sensor was also installed in the field at a construction site. Compared with conventional types of moisture sensor, this new sensor not only is easy to install, but also provide more comprehensive moisture distribution information with far less the cost. Feedbacks from field experience are very positive. This new sensor has potential to significantly improve the current field monitoring instrument for moisture migrations. It will be a useful tool to assist the study of a variety of moisture related phenomena on infrastructure performance. This technology is undergoing further development with experience accumulated from laboratory and field testing program.
