This paper concerns driving instruction as a means of social inclusion for disadvantaged teenagers in France. This group of road users is characterised by few or no formal qualifications, poor job prospects, poor health and personal care and high levels of risk taking. The personal relationship between driver and instructor is important for success. Learning to drive correctly produces changes in social behaviour and passing the test is a measure of success in life. Driver training plays an important part in reducing accidents and fatalities on the road. For the covering abstract see ITRD E113725 (C 22328 CD-ROM).
