Samenvatting

The current study reports on the insights offered into driver behaviour from continuous records of vehicle position and speed obtained using GPS. Initially, a set of performance measures deemed indicative of driving style are developed from GPS data in an experimental setting. These measures are used to characterise the driving style of a sample of motorists based on data recorded over a two-week period. In addition, the position information provided by GPS enables further insights into route choice and micro-level driving tasks such as acceleration characteristics away from intersections. This application demonstrates that the GPS is capable of providing a wealth of insights on driver-behaviour and has considerable scope for expansion of this role in the future.
