Samenvatting

The population trends in India indicate continued urbanisation and metropolitanisation in the decades to come. The existing urban transport infrastructure is stretched to its limits. There is multiplicity of agencies dealing with urban transport making it nobody's responsibility. The paper suggests an institutional framework at National, State and City levels. The author proposes the establishment of Unified Metropolitan Transport Authorities with summary powers to plan, execute, co-ordinate, operate and maintain urban transport systems.
