Within the framework of a research project aiming to define the requirements of intelligent driver support systems, this study focusses on the identification of situations and behaviours that require feedback as drivers progress from inexperienced to experienced status. In order to collect behavioural and situational information about accidents and errors, in-depth interviews were held and a detailed questionnaire was distributed to 1200 drivers in The Netherlands. Some 1780 traffic incidents and 1630 behavioural errors were reported. The findings show that type of errors and accident situations differ dependant on level of experience.
