Instrumented vehicles as a research tool : a historical review.

The opening speech of the workshop on Use of Instrumented Vehicles in Traffic, at Soesterberg, 1973 is presented. The question of general versus special purpose vehicles is Largely a matter of taste. The availability of multivariate techniques for data reduction has shifted research in the direction of greater complexity, and this makes the development of special purpose vehicles less adequate.
