Samenvatting
The paper presents in detail the database and the use of information on compensated accidents in Finland from motor liability insurance, details are also given of a database on fatal accidents which is used by special investigation teams. Files in the databases described are disaggregated, hierarchical and are available to collaborating organisations and researchers. The databases are often used together to increase knowledge on the subject. Examples are given of statistical analysis using the database to show the distribution of accidents by driver's age and road conditions during the period 1989 to 1993. Cases are given of research based on information from the databases leading to the introduction of safety legislation.
