This paper is concerned with connecting theory and practice. The paper uses Wilber's 4Q/nL model to provide a basis for a broader and deeper understanding of approaches to sustainable transport. This approach recognises different domains of complexity within social systems and the cultural contexts that create our understanding and action. Developing a capacity for integral vision enables us to see beneath the surface layers of patterns and events to the deeper structures that influence how we think, feel and act. It enables the possibility of social transcendence by explicitly recognising the interplay between epistemological and ontological levels of reality. The paper represents work in progress and is broadly divided into two parts. It introduces elements of the `theory' relating to the integral view, but is not definitive about the `practice' of the integral view. The paper concludes that a key gap in the mix of options currently considered in relation to sustainable transport highlights the need for transport planners and energy planners to talk with each other!
