Samenvatting

This paper presents the area studies policy of the London Borough of Hounslow, for traffic calming and other traffic management measures. To develop this approach, a team was formed from representatives of various interested parties. Its work had the following stages: (1) the Borough was divided into 25 areas, whose boundaries included important motorways, railways and rivers; (2) existing traffic information was sorted by area; (3) the environmental impact and other effects of traffic were assessed in detail for each area, and points were awarded to indicate the severity of each problem identified; and (4) the points awarded were totalled for each area, and areas were rated in priority order according to their order according to their total points. The Aerodrome area of Hounslow was given top priority, largely due to its high number of road accidents. An initial consultation there led to the first stage of the design process. This was followed by a second consultation, leading to detailed design and implementation of the final Aerodrome scheme, with many traffic calming and other measures. The scheme was substantially complete by mid-1993, and its effects are outlined. The main advantages and disadvantages of Hounslow's approach to traffic calming are stated.
