In 1994 a comprehensive project of road safety improvement was started in Poland; this is carried out by several institutes with the assistance of road administrations and research organisations in Sweden and France. The GAMBIT project concentrates on identification of weak and strong points. Number of killed in road accidents in Poland rose from 5633 in 1975 to 6744 in 1994. Present road safety policy comprises immediate temporary programmes of action and long term integrated programmes of road safety improvement. Number of road fatalities in Poland is extremely high (ca 7000 annually); 14 people per 100 injuries die in road accidents, against 3.5% in EU. Unless effective countermeasures are taken, fatalities will continue to rise until 2010. Two basic tasks must be faced: 1. Creation of a stable financing system for road safety activities, 2. Creation of stable legal foundations.
