Samenvatting

Roundabouts have become very popular in the Netherlands over the last couple of years. There are three types of roundabouts: the mini, the midi and the large-scale roundabout. The various types are used quite indiscriminately on different locations in traffic networks. The driving skills of the various road users are limited. Driving tasks are very different on traffic arteries then in residential areas. The application of functional theory of driving behaviour and more specifically the human performance model, which differentiates between three levels of cognitive functioning, pleas for consistent roundabout design. Designs should be adjusted to the driving tasks required in either residential areas or on traffic arteries. The application of the theory leads to design suggestions for the three types of roundabouts.
