Integrated speed and lane use signs: a new approach for the Monash-CityLink-West Gate upgrade.

The Monash-CityLink-West Gate Upgrade is a major project that will improve traffic flow and safety on the state's busiest road corridor. The upgrade will include adding additional lanes, improving entry/exit points and introducing a new intelligent freeway management system that will revolutionise how traffic flows. As part of the freeway management system, intelligent speed and lane use management will be installed to improve safety and capacity on key sections of road. This paper outlines the extensive investigation and evaluation work undertaken to develop the best signage solution to meet the operational objectives in a complex road environment. VicRoads built upon previous research and Australian and international practice to develop four options in partnership with Transurban, who operate the CityLink section of the upgrade. VicRoads engaged ARRB Group to investigate international research on key issues as well as public understanding and perception testing. Whole-of-life cost and risk were two other key factors in the options evaluation. After selection of the preferred option of integrated speed and lane use signs, VicRoads has continued to develop relevant policy and standards, including guidelines for locating the signs in a variety of road environments.
