This paper describes the implementation of an Integrated Traffic Management System by the Roads Corporation of Victoria (VIC ROADS) to provide the safest and most effective traffic operations for the Melbourne metropolitan area. A brief description is given of the components of the system. These comprise a traffic signal system based on SCATS (the Sydney Co-ordinated Adaptive Traffic System) which provides priority for buses and a Traffic Control and Communications Centre. Also described are the a) incident management system, b) closed circuit television monitoring, c) a system for traffic data collection, d) a system for road information data collection, e) traffic information broadcasting, f) the public transport priority system and g) a freeway emergency telephone system. The involvement of VIC ROADS in IVHS Australia is noted.
