Samenvatting

This report was submitted in part fulfilment of the Master of Engineering Science (Civil) Degree of Queensland University of Technology. It investigates the on-road integration of cyclists with other traffic. It briefly assesses road layouts such as wide kerb side lanes, shared bicycle and parking lanes, and exclusive bicycle lanes and provides recommendations as to the continuation of these facilities at intersections. Special attention is given to cyclists' safety and needs at unsignalised intersections, signalised intersections, roundabouts, and T junctions. Each type of cycle lane, road layout or carriageway marking method is evaluated regarding: a) safety and b) the specific requirements of cyclists such as the need for minimum delay, uninterrupted traffic flow and assistance at difficult crossing points. An assessment of the road layouts already provided for cyclists in Queensland is also provided, together with a study of bicycle accidents.
