Increasingly intelligent driver support is required in view of the increasing information load on vehicle operators. Following a brief historical note on cognitive models of driver behaviour and decision making, this paper discusses two core issues of intelligent driver support as conceived in the GIDS (Generic Intelligent Driver Support) project (DRIVE V 1041). A functional description is given of the Analyst/Planner and the Dialogue Control components in the GIDS system that is presently under development. The purpose of the GIDS project is to develop an intelligent electronic co-driver. Co-drivers are systems, human or otherwise which support drivers during task performance by providing them with information in the form of warning, advice, or intervention under a range of critical circumstances. As it is presently being developed, GIDS will offer warning advice and instruction, but will not take control of the vehicle. The export system which is the basis of the GIDS system is described briefly first, followed by a diagram of its structure, and a discussion of the problems posed when designing the method by which the system can communicate with the driver.
