Samenvatting

This paper gives a general brief overview of the use of intelligent speed adaptation (ISA). ISA systems are the subject of pilot studies in several European countries. The systems vary from simple speed limiters for trucks to advanced roadside-to-car electronic information; and in the degree to which the driver is able to control the system. The potential for improving safety by controlling speed is discussed, with the enhanced driving comfort possible. The author accepts that full deployment of mandatory, automatic ISA is unlikely at present. A European standard would aid effective and cost-efficient introduction, and if new vehicles were fitted with ISA as standard practice, countries could implement as much of the system as required.
