In an effort to balance competing transportation objectives as well as meet urban design criteria, the Edinburgh Parking Guidance and Information (PGI) was strategically designed to group car parks into distinct parking areas to restrict cross town movement. This was supported by a modular VMS designed to reduce visual intrusiveness, as well as a more comprehensive fixed signing system. The focus on the broader transportation objectives as well as the emphasis on the aesthetic look of the VMS within the urban environment proved to be two factors which contributed to the success of the implementation of the PGI system in Edinburgh.
