Intelligent transportation systems and the older traveler : prospects for mobility enhancement. A commentary on: will intelligent transportation systems improve older driver mobility?

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) offer many opportunities to enhance the mobility of older drivers and travelers. Safety and distraction issues remain challenges for in-vehicle devices for both older and younger travelers. Previous research has done an excellent job in reviewing critical issues in the safe operation of in-vehicle devices. It is also important that ITS services and systems be encouraged that will assist the nondriving traveler. Preliminary research on these systems shows great promise for the future.
