Samenvatting

Commissioned by the Directorate General of Freight Transport, AVV Transport Research Centre is investigating the underlying causes of accidents between trucks and passenger cars in a project called 'Interactions between truck and passenger car drivers'. The current report, displaying the results of analysing the traffic accident statistics of AVV-BG, contains answers to the questions asked in phase 2a of the project. These answers must, however, be interpreted with caution. The analyses show that truck-passenger car accidents do not happen extremely often, but do relatively often result in serious injury or death. The types of truck-passenger car injury accidents that occur most often are 'rear-end' accidents (on all types of road), 'crossing, both going straight ahead' accidents on 50- and 80-km roads, 'head-on' accidents on 50-, 80- and 100 km roads and 'changing lanes to the right' accidents on 100- and 120-km roads. How often a factor is coded for either (or both) of the parties, and which factor this is, depends in varying amounts on (combinations of) type of road and type of accident. To gain real insight into the causes lying behind the different types of truck-passenger car accidents, in the next phase of the project truck and passenger car drivers must be asked what behaviour according to them leads to the accidents described as being most frequent and/or most dangerous in the current report. Besides that, other methods must be used to gain a more objective insight into the causes of the accidents. (A)
