Samenvatting

This paper introduces the planning and design of Public Transport interchanges. Little research has been conducted on rail-rail interchanges, which are the primary focus of this paper. A literature search has highlighted key findings in five areas important for interchange design and planning in Public Transport. A hierarchy for Melbourne metropolitan rail-rail interchanges proposes using the following 8 transfer types: Rail Spur Line Transfer, City Loop (A, B and C) Transfers, Inter-rail group Transfer, Inter-Line Transfer. Country/ Local Rail Transfer, Metro Express/Stoppers Rail Transfer and Short line Transfer. A field research analyzed planning and design quality at one interchange of each type. The analysis confirmed that special attention to transfer information and signage was paid only on the 3 City Loop Transfer stations. All the other categories have no special transfer signage or layout and had a poor quality of transfer. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E211903.
