Samenvatting

The effects of colour on entrances and exits of a continuous motorway were examined. White, yellow and blue reflective material was used for the through traffic, entrances and exits, respectively. Observation of erratic drivers movements showed a significant decrease after colour application. It appeared to be equally effective during the night as in daytime. Results of interviews, held at different periods, are tabulated. The blue edge marking received the largest increase in attention. The destination signboard at the exit on blue background was best noticed. There was inconclusive evidence regarding the effect on the accident rate. The scheme appeared to be readily understood, also by the less familiar drivers and an extension of the scheme is planned.
