Samenvatting

The Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management has asked SEPA and TBA Nederland to look into innovative ways of improving interconnectivity, without hampering the market processes. A three month study scrutinised the potential of telematics and new incentive structures and revealed a new role for the Ministry and regional transport authorities. The paper presents a typology of approaches of the organisation of interconnectivity with a deregulated environment. It assesses their strengths and weaknesses. The typology is on examples from five different countries, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Denmark and France. In addition, it presents the approach proposed for future organisation of interconnectivity in the Netherlands. Finally, the paper concludes with an analysis of the possible application of this approach in other European countries.
