In Hannover an interdisciplinary team (medical specialists, engineers and a psychologist) are working on an on the spot accident investigation programme. The first results show that only 36% of the accident causes could be prevented or diminished, while 64% are caused by human failure, which is not or only with great difficulty to be modified. The analysis of pedestrian accidents show that 1) serious injuries occur because of impact from the car and not because of the impact from the pavement, and 2) that the severeness of injury is lower with a VW type of car body than with a ponton shape.
