This IRT system is an urban transport system which has a capacity which is between that of the street and the conventional rail-bed. It is a system of small, lightweight, individual vehicles, which run automatically under computer control, on a lightweight guideway which is usually elevated. The driverless vehicles can run at such close frequency, for 24 hours a day if required, that time tables are unnecessary. It is shown that IRT will permit land use patterns which have, hitherto, not been possible with conventional means of movement.
