Samenvatting

Results of a model study of internal energy dissipators for culverts on a steep slope and operating under inlet control are discussed. The shortest ring chamber design that effectively reduces the outlet velocity is provided. Ring chamber diameters are expressed as a function of the upstream froude number. Spacing and dimensions of roughness elements are related to ring chamber diameter. The model results are compared with prototype performance and adjusted to improvetheir accuracy. Hydraulic design parameters that affect the operation of such culverts are discussed, and practical design procedures are given. This paper appeared in transportation research record no. 1151, hydraulic erosion. For covering abstract see irrd no 818454.
