This publication presents a range of tables and charts covering various aspects of transport in European countries both within and without the European Union, Japan and the USA. It replaces the three part series of statistical reports published between 1988 and 1995, the most recent instalment of which was published in January 1995. This new publication contains as far as possible all of the data covered by the three part series. Most of the data in the tables and charts cover the period up to 1993, the latest year for which comprehensive international data are available. The publication will be updated annually, and if possible extended to cover additional countries and topics. The next edition covering up to 1994 should be available by the end of 1996. The tables and charts draw upon a wide variety of sources, as described in the Appendix. There is considerable variation between countries in both methods of estimation and data collection, and in application of definitions. Because of this some caution is needed in interpreting the comparisons and differences illustrated in the tables and charts. (A)
