Samenvatting

This paper describes an international effort in the development of a driver-centred safety guideline to supplement existing design and traffic engineering manuals. It will illustrate how these driver-centred design and control decisions can be implemented to make users' tasks safer. Experts from North America and Europe met for discussions. In 1999, six TRB (US Transportation Research Board) technical committees were presented with the concept; they provided enthusiastic support. The development of the guideline will be a long-term effort with a time frame of 5 to 8 years. Interim drafts are envisioned. (A)
