Samenvatting

In 2001 the Road Safety Division of the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR) commissioned Ross Silcock (a member of the Babtie Group) to undertake an international review of Driver Improvement Schemes consisting of two main strands: (a) undertake an extensive review of Driver Improvement Schemes overseas and (b) produce a literature review of studies evaluating the effectiveness of these schemes. This paper draws upon the above ongoing research project and provides some background to the current UK National Driver Improvement Scheme (NDIS) and the policy context with regard to the potential expanded use of NDIS within the UK. The project methodology and some descriptions of the use of driver improvement schemes for ‘problem drivers’ in Australia, New Zealand and Europe emerging from the research are also presented.
