Samenvatting

The case study of an electronic payment system in Malaysia is used to demonstrate benefits gained by an integrated approach to the use of 'smart' ITS capability. The use of interoperable smart card and communications technologies has not only enabled a flexible approach to tolling, but has encouraged the further utilisation of related services. Benefits to operators and customers include convenience, cost and security with sustainability gained from an identified technical and contractual upgrade path. The importance of working in partnership with Government and stakeholders is recognised, enabling the creation of popular and future-proof solutions utilising readily available and developing technologies.
