Samenvatting

On roads designed according to design speed, large differences can appear among the travel speeds along the alignment, a phenomenon that might constitute a safety risk. In order to estimate these differences quantitatively, and to measure the relationship between travel speed and design speed. Tests were carried out on roads in Israel that were constructed over the past decade. Criteria and recommendations are presented for selecting the design speed according to road hierarchy, topographic area, traffic volume, and the distance between main junctions.
