Samenvatting

The Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety - Queensland (CARRS-Q) was established in November 1996 as a joint initiative of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC). The organisational structure is described. CARRS-Q and MAIC encourage the development of innovative road accident prevention initiatives in Queensland through a research grant scheme. Examples of recent research projects conducted by CARRS-Q include research on risk taking behaviour of young people, a trial of alcohol ignition interlock devices, issues relating to unlicensed driving, and research into drink driving and drug driving. CARRS-Q aims to raise community awareness of the social, environmental and financial costs of road crashes. CARRS-Q and the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland have launched the Queensland Road Safety Awards scheme aimed at increased community, industry and media involvement in the campaign to reduce road accidents.
