Samenvatting

The risk perception skills of young and older drivers in Cyprus were investigated using a questionnaire based on a particular 8 km inter-urban road segment including bends and an intersection. The older drivers were 63-76 years of age while the younger drivers were 19-24. The young drivers rated the bends to be worse in one direction than in the other. At the intersection the acceleration lane was considered safe whereas the deceleration lane was considered dangerous. Young drivers were likely to overtake four times on the section of road whereas older drivers were only likely to overtake once. Older drivers rated the bends as more risky than younger drivers. Older drivers rated their driving ability to be above average more frequently than did young drivers. They were also more likely to obey the speed limit and to avoid driving at night. When the results of this survey were compared with a similar study in Greece, while the roads were of poorer condition in Greece, Greek drivers often drove at higher speeds than Cypriot drivers. Greek drivers also disliked driving under congested conditions. For the covering abstract see ITRD E122795.
