An investigation of fifteen surface dressings was carried out with the objective if identifying factors which contributed to 'delayed-action' loss of chippings from some of the dressings. The major conclusion arising out of the investigation is that these surface dressings did not achieve a sufficient embedment of the chippings before the onset of winter. It is recommended that further research be carried out on a number of factors including embedment, which influence the performence of surface dressing in Ireland should be drawn up.
