Samenvatting

This paper presents and discusses certain generic issues relevant to the Man Machine Interface of on-board Advanced Transport Telematics (ATT) systems. An investigation, using driving simulators, of the influence of drivers' age upon head up display design is presented. The reactions of elderly drivers to a Head Up Display were tested and compared with those obtained when the same drivers were presented with a traditional LCD screen. The following criteria were used to test drivers' reactions to messages displayed on the systems: a) eye movements; b) response time; c) driving performance; and d) drivers opinion of the workload imposed by the system. The effect upon driver performance of the size and complexity of the symbols used on the displays are also studied and presented.
