This report describes the results of a research program both theoretical and experimental. The long range objective was the establishment of improved standards for vehicle rear lighting. The theoretical part was mainly concerned with determining information requirements of rear lighting system and examining various methods for coding the require information. The general information environment of the driver is considered in detail. The problem of car-following in two and- car strings is treated. The psychological considerations relevant to the problem of dimming display evens are discussed. The problem of obtaining suitable evaluation aileron for rear lighting systems is also dealt with. The experimental program consisted of both laboratory and road experiments.
