Spiking at licensure, young novice driver crash risk reduces with age and experience in the subsequent months and years. Experience gained through on-road driving in particular results in a dramatic reduction in crash risk in early licensure. However, it is not clear what is being learned during this period to make drivers safer. The international research domain is turning its attention to trying to understand what is being learned by drivers during this period. Such knowledge can help inform policy and intervention development. The objective of the study was to understand whether young drivers learn more or less quickly to reduce certain types of collisions in the first few years of driving. In addition, the study sought to explore whether young driver accident trends have changed over time possibly as a result of demographic, societal or technological advances. (Author/publisher)
