This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in Israel. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population, c) employment, d) education, e) the economy and f) temporal patterns. The transportation system is described including a) the structure of the public transport system, b) car ownership and use, c) urban and metropolitan transport, d) interurban transport and e) rural transport. Travel patterns are considered in more detail with statistics relating to a) trip purpose and b) modal split for Tel-Aviv in 1984. Israel's policy making structure is described. Israel's situation as virtually a small island state is discussed.
