Samenvatting

Current attitudes about the provision of better facilities for cyclists are discussed. It shows that the dominant issue is the question of safety: cycling is widely believed to be inherently dangerous and there is evidence that this is acting as a deterrent to a more vigorous re-examination of its possibilities as a transport mode. The paper argues that the relative safety of cycling is frequently misrepresented by present accident statistics.
