This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in Italy. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population, c) employment, d) education, e) the economy and f) temporal patterns. The transportation system is described including a) the structure of the public transport system, b) car ownership and use, c) urban and regional transport and d) interurban transport. Travel patterns are discussed with statistics provided on trends in modal split between 1975 and 1990. Italy's policy making structure is described and some of Italy's policies outlined.
