The Japanese Ministry of Transport surveyed the needs of bus users in relation to the development of information systems supporting public transport. The plan is to provide bus users with basic information about buses on regular routes in Tokyo using the internet or other communication media. Information was collected from bus companies to produce a database accessible by internet or fax. 1500 accesses to the top page of the web site were obtained on weekdays. 9000 users responded to questionnaires. Of the information provided, timetables, routes and fares were the most requested items. Information on railway transfers, and accessibility of information via mobile phones were the most frequent requests. Bus companies reported a decrease in the number of enquiries by telephone.
