The UK Urban Traffic Management and Control programme has researched the use of a common database to achieve integration of heterogeneous traffic systems. CORBA interfaces and a standard data model give interoperability and encourage portability. The common database interfaces provide applications with simple yet powerful data access services. On-street trials in Leicester and in Glasgow have demonstrated working integrated systems. Two kinds of integration were achieved: sharing of data between previously unconnected applications to yield new functionality, and the creation of an open interface to replace an existing closed proprietary link, enabling public access to the common data for analysis or other applications.
