In-car navigation systems and vehicle information and communication systems (VICS) are increasing in use in Japan. VICS was initiated along 7000km of expressways and will be extended to all prefectures within the next few years. Real-time flight information has been introduced in airport car parks and in-car route guidance systems using digital video discs (DVDs) provide a more detailed service. Navigation co-operative shift control (gear changing) can provide smoother cornering. A single new electronic toll collection system will cover all highways in Japan. Smart cards are being introduced that pay highway tolls and parking charges. The practical development of adaptive cruise control systems, including track testing is described. A new road system, Smartway, with road-vehicle communication and full ITS facilities, is under development. It aims to provide a service to pedestrians and disabled people, as well as vehicle drivers. ITS deployment in rural areas for the prediction of adverse weather conditions and landslides is planned.
