ITS-Netherlands is a public private partnership to co-ordinate major ITS developments and implementations in the Netherlands. ITS-NL is operational from April 1997 on an informal and preliminary basis, with 22 organisations spontaneously participating, consisting of government bodies, port authorities, business and industry companies, research centres and user organisations. Political approval by both Chambers of the Dutch Parliament, needed for the formal establishment of ITS-NL, was expected in autumn 1997. In its first phase of operation ITS-NL will focus primarily on inland transport, including relevant relations to other transport modes in the mainport areas of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The working programme of ITS-Netherlands is organised around five permanent interest groups: (1) Transport of goods (chain approach); (2) Transport of people (chain approach); (3) Traffic management; (4) Traveller information; and (5) Infrastructural relations, architecture. Top priority is given to the definition and implementation of a nationwide architecture for (inland) traffic management and traveller information, well attuned with broader European actions undertaken by the European Union and Ertico/ITS-Europe.
